Hit songwriter Jeffrey Steele, known for penning chart-toppers for Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, and other country stars, returned to the spotlight this month with a new single, “A Voice,” released January 16.
The song centers on free speech, cultural courage, and the cost of speaking out in modern America. Near its close, Steele pays tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk with the lyric, “The Charlie Kirk choir all lightin’ our lighters.”
The line was revised after Steele attended a vigil in Tennessee following the tragic murder of Charlie Kirk. . Steele has said the lyric change was meant to honor Kirk and all those who were moved to speak out and embrace Christ in remembrance of Kirk. “A Voice” marks Steele’s reemergence not just as a songwriter, but as a bold truth teller standing up for freedom at a time when it is needed most.
“This song is a reminder that our voices matter — that real strength lives in speaking truth with courage and heart. I wrote it for anyone who’s ever been afraid to speak up or step into who they were meant to be.” Steele said about his song in a press release.
“In a world where politicians tell you what you need, Big Tech tells you what you can see and read, celebrities tell you what to believe, and the media has seemingly general disdain for the American people, this is a song that encourages every day Americans to stand up and have a voice even if they’re afraid,” he added.
