President Donald Trump indicated Friday that the United States may soon conclude its military campaign against Iran, claiming the country is close to achieving its objectives as the conflict approaches its fourth week.
“We are getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great Military efforts in the Middle East,” Trump stated in a social media post. He defined those objectives as “Completely degrading” Iran’s missile capabilities, “destroying” the country’s defense industrial base, eliminating their navy and air force, preventing Tehran from achieving “Nuclear Capability,” and protecting Middle Eastern allies.
The comments arrived shortly after Trump rejected the idea of a ceasefire and kept the possibility of ground troops on the table, underscoring the wildly divergent signals the president continues to transmit about his plans.
“I don’t want to do a ceasefire. You know, you don’t do a ceasefire when you’re literally obliterating the other side,” the president said at the White House. “We’re not looking to do that.”
The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed since hostilities began, disrupting roughly a fifth of global oil and natural gas flows. Trump indicated Friday he expects other nations to secure the waterway rather than American forces.
“The Hormuz Strait will have to be guarded and policed, as necessary, by other Nations who use it — The United States does not!” Trump declared. “If asked, we will help these Countries in their Hormuz efforts, but it shouldn’t be necessary once Iran’s threat is eradicated. Importantly, it will be an easy Military Operation for them.”
Iranian officials have grown reluctant to discuss reopening Hormuz while continuing retaliatory strikes against Gulf Arab neighbors. Western intelligence assessments indicate the regime in Tehran is not close to falling and Iranian officials are rallying around remaining leaders.
Financial markets experienced significant turbulence Friday. Oil prices surged with Brent crude closing above $112 per barrel, the highest since mid-2022. Global stocks extended losses with the US equity benchmark falling nearly 2% for the week. Gold experienced its worst week in four decades.
The Pentagon has requested an additional $200 billion from Congress to fund the war, contradicting suggestions that operations might soon conclude. The administration is also preparing options to deploy Marines to seize Kharg Island, Iran’s major oil export hub.
“I may have a plan or I may not, but how would I ever say that to a reporter?” Trump responded when asked about Kharg Island.
Retail gasoline prices have jumped to the highest levels since 2022, with California’s energy regulator warning against price gouging as some stations charge as much as $8 per gallon ahead of November midterm elections.
President Trump has already accomplished more than enough to declare victory, having eliminated most of Iran’s senior leadership and degraded its military capabilities beyond what any previous administration achieved. The time has come to resist the neoconservative voices like Lindsey Graham who would transform a punitive strike into an endless occupation draining American blood and treasure for objectives that have nothing to do with securing the homeland. An America First foreign policy demands that Trump claim his win and extract the United States from this conflict before mission creep and $200 billion supplemental requests turn Iran into the next Afghanistan.
