Mark Houck, a devout Catholic and father of seven, has secured a seven figure settlement from the Department of Justice after the FBI raided his Pennsylvania home at gunpoint during the Biden administration. The resolution ends a legal saga that began with an arrest that critics condemned as a politically motivated attack on pro-life activists.
The case originated from an October 2021 incident outside a Philadelphia abortion clinic. Houck and his young son were present when a pro-abortion volunteer began harassing and yelling at the boy. Houck pushed the volunteer away to protect his child. Federal prosecutors subsequently charged Houck with violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, commonly known as the FACE Act.
A jury acquitted Houck in 2023. He and his wife then filed a lawsuit alleging that the Biden DOJ had engaged in malicious and retaliatory prosecution, abuse of process, false arrest, and assault. The lawsuit specifically accused the DOJ of conducting a faulty investigation and using excessive force during the raid on the family’s home.
The heavy handed FBI operation sparked widespread condemnation. Senator Josh Hawley questioned then Attorney General Merrick Garland in 2023 about the FBI’s “unbelievable show of force” against a father with no criminal history.
According to Fox News Digital, the legal battle dragged on for three years. Houck blamed what he described as an “activist judge” who blocked negotiations between his legal team and the Trump led Justice Department.
Shawn Carney, CEO of 40 Days for Life, celebrated the outcome last week. “A bigger victory for the pro-life movement at large,” Carney stated, calling it “a huge victory for free speech” and “a huge victory for all Americans who want our right to speak our minds peacefully in a law-abiding way without fear of our own government.”
Carney also credited President Trump for ending the persecution. The pro life movement had received “so much persecution from the DOJ under Biden,” he said, expressing gratitude that “President Trump has corrected that.”
The DOJ released a report this week that validated the criticism. The document concluded that the Biden administration “shattered the public’s trust by weaponizing the FACE Act to advance a pro-abortion agenda.”
