Federal agents searched the Portsmouth office of Virginia Senate President pro tempore L. Louise Lucas and a neighboring cannabis shop Wednesday, bringing public attention to what people familiar with the matter described as an ongoing corruption investigation.
The FBI said only that it was conducting a court-authorized search in Portsmouth. Such a search requires approval from a judge and a finding that investigators have established probable cause to believe evidence of a crime may be found.
Lucas, a Democrat who has served in the state Senate for 34 years, criticized the search in a statement Wednesday evening, saying it reflected “a clear pattern” of intimidation by President Donald Trump’s administration. But one person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press that the probe began during the administration of former President Joe Biden, a detail that complicates claims that the matter is solely a product of current partisan politics.
Agents searched Lucas’ hometown office, which serves as both the base for her political operation and the location of her disabilities services business. FBI personnel also entered the nearby Cannabis Outlet, a shop Lucas opened in 2021. By evening, agents were seen carrying boxes and bags from the rear of the store.
Lucas has said the business sells legal hemp and CBD products. The shop has previously drawn local scrutiny over allegations that some products were mislabeled. Virginia has legalized possession of marijuana, but retail sales of recreational cannabis remain illegal.
The search came at a politically sensitive moment. Lucas has been a leading figure in Virginia Democrats’ recent redistricting effort, which voters approved last month as part of a broader national fight over congressional maps. Democrats promoted the measure as a response to Republican-led redistricting efforts encouraged by Trump.
Several Virginia Democrats urged caution or raised concerns about the federal action. House Speaker Don Scott said there was “far more theatrics and speculation than actual information” and called for more facts before political conclusions are drawn. Gov. Abigail Spanberger declined to comment.
Republicans and conservatives are likely to point to the court-authorized nature of the search and the Biden-era origin of the investigation as reasons not to dismiss the matter as political retaliation. At the same time, Lucas has not been charged with a crime, and the search itself does not establish wrongdoing.
The investigation places renewed attention on Lucas’ business interests, her support for marijuana legalization and her long-standing influence in Virginia politics. Lucas, 82, is the first woman and first African American to serve as president pro tempore of the Virginia Senate. She was first elected to public office in Portsmouth in the 1980s and has remained one of the state’s most prominent Democratic lawmakers.
The FBI and Justice Department have not disclosed the scope of the investigation or whether any charges are expected. But one thing is for sure: Louise Lucas is just the latest DEI-hire Democrat clown who embodies privilege, getting everything handed to her not because of merit but rather out of tokenism driven by white guilt.
