President Donald J. Trump promised to veto destructive Democratic legislation after the party won control of Congress in the midterms, while also expressing optimism for compromise.
In comments to FOX News, Trump said, “They’ll send things over that are insane and I’ll veto them. And after a couple of months of vetoes, they’ll go out and they’ll say, ‘How do we get this stuff done?’ And we’ll work together.”
Trump also said, “I’d consider doing whatever I think is appropriate and good for the country,” regarding a possible immigration deal with Democrats. Since Democrats have re-embraced “abolish ICE” radicalism and are ideologically committed to amnesty, Trump will likely have ample opportunity to veto insane proposals on the subject.
The president has expressed optimism in making deals and working across the aisle previously, without compromising his core agenda. Unfortunately, aggrieved Democrats will likely focus on launching investigations and possible impeachment efforts against administration officials in the next two years, as they try to hype their base up for 2028.
Rep. Robert Garcia, a California Democrat, has said that the party will be investigating the administration’s handling of the Epstein files, as well as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. Democrats have harped on the former issue since 2025, successfully convincing swaths of voters that Trump is a pedophile-protector, if not a pedophile himself, despite absolutely no evidence. They have also argued that their issue is with heavy-handed ICE tactics, without ever expressing support for any kind of meaningful enforcement.
Democrats’ strategy may prove politically effective: by attempting to portray the Trump administration as corrupt, and not moving forward any bills that alienate voters, they will be able to lie that they represent a return to normalcy in the 2028 presidential elections. This all depends, though, on whether they can keep the most fringe elements of their party in check. Judging from recent history, this is not likely, and hopefully American voters will realize that despite their posturing, Democrats have not actually moderated on anything since their 2024 presidential defeat.
