A major showdown is unfolding in Washington over the SAVE America Act, President Donald Trump’s top legislative priority aimed at strengthening election integrity across the United States.
But instead of uniting behind the effort, many Senate Republicans are drawing fierce criticism from conservatives for what critics say is another act of establishment betrayal.
The bill—already passed by the House—would overhaul federal election law, including requiring proof of citizenship to vote, strengthening voter ID protections, and cracking down on loopholes critics say allow illegal voting and weaken election security. Trump has repeatedly called the SAVE America Act his “No. 1 priority.”
Yet despite controlling the Senate, Republican leadership is openly acknowledging the bill likely won’t pass. Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced the chamber will debate the bill, but admitted he cannot guarantee its passage.
The reason is the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold, which Democrats are expected to use to block the legislation. Several GOP senators have dismissed the bill’s chances outright. Senator Thom Tillis bluntly told reporters there is a “0% chance” it succeeds. Others argue the party should focus on different legislation instead of Trump’s election reforms.
The attitude represents the same establishment mindset that has repeatedly stalled conservative priorities in Washington. Supporters of the bill have proposed several options to break the deadlock, including forcing a “talking filibuster” that would require Democrats to continuously hold the floor to block the bill. Another option would be invoking the “nuclear option” to change Senate rules with a simple majority vote.
But a number of Republican senators—including Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Mitch McConnell—are refusing to support changing the filibuster rules, effectively ensuring the bill remains stuck. Republicans would rather be going to dinners with lobbyists and getting their coffers filled with special interest money at fundraisers than to stand and fight.
Republicans campaign on securing elections, win majorities, and then fail to deliver when it matters most. Meanwhile, President Trump continues pressing Congress to act, warning that secure elections are essential to restoring trust in the democratic process. The fight over the SAVE America Act is once again showing the Republican Party will never stand with the voters who elected them.
