It’s safe to say that President Donald J. Trump’s political opponents haven’t exactly come up with any novel arguments against him since his first term.
Talk of invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office has once again popped up, with Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin also demanding a cognitive test for good measure. Raskin raised the issue in response to Trump’s rhetoric against Iran prior to the two-week ceasefire, in which he threatened to wipe out the country’s civilization if they did not come to an agreement.
Other past Trump foes like former CIA Director John Brennan have come out of the woodwork to argue the same. California Congressman Ro Khanna, who has also relentlessly pushed baseless Epstein conspiracy theories against Trump, called for Trump’s removal and accused his threat of violating the Geneva Conventions.
Given that Trump has been in the political spotlight for eleven years, you would think his maximalist style of negotiation would no longer be news. As a candidate in 2015, Trump talked of “[bombing] the shit out of [ISIS,]” and his 2017 escalation of threats with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un provoked similar freakouts as his Iran comment. And yet, much like in these previous scenarios, nothing catastrophic has in fact happened.
Of course, the question is whether Democratic leaders are in fact outraged over Trump’s remarks, or if they simply trying to rally the leftist troops before the midterms. Rep. Raskin admitted that while according to him, Trump had committed “impeachable offenses,” he did not believe that Democrats had the means to impeach him currently. Should Democrats retake the House of Representatives this year, though, there is little doubt we will be treated to 2019 impeachment redux, with similar results.
The truth of the matter is, though, that nothing about Trump’s approach to politics has meaningfully changed. Former President Joe Biden really did visibly mentally decline while in office, while Trump hasn’t, as much as liberals wish it were so. Much like the failed attempts to link Trump to Epstein, the revived 25th Amendment talk is the sign of a party wishing it could magically kick him out of office. They have no tricks left.
