Representative Majorie Taylor Greene announced that she would be resigning from Congress effective January 5, 2026, after months of criticizing the Trump administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.
Greene’s resignation comes after President Donald J. Trump said he would support a primary challenger in her district “if the right person runs.” He further claimed that Greene had “gone Far Left” and dubbed her “Majorie ‘Traitor’ Greene” in a Truth Social post.
While Democrats have long viewed Greene as a far-right boogeyman in U.S. politics, they have looked favorably on her break with President Trump over the Epstein files. This issue has served the same function as the baseless Russia conspiracy theories did in Trump’s first term. There is no evidence implicating Trump in any crimes related with Epstein, but Democrats find it politically useful to insinuate that there is, and any Republican support for their view gives them “bipartisan” cover.
Greene has framed her calls to release the Epstein files as a principled stand, saying, “Rich, powerful people should not be protected.” She claimed to be puzzled by Trump’s opposition against releasing the files, saying that none of the women involved in the Epstein investigation had accused him of wrongdoing.
The truth, though, isn’t complicated: this is the Democrats’ official invented scandal of Trump’s second term. The longer they keep it going, the more they can attempt to gin up outrage and midterm turnout. Trump recognizes this, and accurately refers to the matter as a hoax, much like he did with the conjured-up Russia conspiracy. Greene may have her own personal views on the issue, but Democrats likely view her as a useful idiot for their narrative, which has to do with damaging Trump’s political prospects, not truth.
Recently, Trump called for the release of the Epstein files, and subsequently signed legislation to this effect. Though the media cast this as a major policy reversal, Trump echoed his previous sentiment on the issue, saying, “Democrats have used the ‘Epstein’ issue, which affects them far more than the Republican Party, in order to try and distract from our AMAZING Victories.” Undoubtedly, Democrats will attempt to keep the distraction going even after nothing is found in the files. Hopefully, Republicans don’t help them.
