Americans who voted for President Donald J. Trump in 2024 differ in their views of how aggressive his administration’s deportation campaign should be, according to recent polls.
While there is broad agreement among Trump voters that illegal aliens convicted of violent crimes or sexual offenses should be prioritized for removal, the president’s coalition diverges on deporting those who have no criminal history. Trump voters who do not identify as MAGA are twice as likely as self-proclaimed MAGA Trump voters to say that the administration’s deportation approach has gone too far. Meanwhile, approximately a third of MAGA Trump voters think the deportation campaign has not gone far enough, while only around a fourth of non-MAGA Trump voters agree.
The poll comes as the GOP heads into a tough midterm election, as well as select Republican politicians breaking with Trump on his immigration policy. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., previously ran an ad claiming that the administration had overstepped on immigration. Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., has claimed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should work more closely with local law enforcement in the state.
Trump, of course, made no secret of his views on illegal immigration in his 2024 presidential campaign, and he effectively secured the border after the massive influx of illegal aliens under the Biden administration. With ICE’s operations in Minneapolis early this year, though, Democratic activists and politicians mounted a large propaganda pushback, portraying the agency as a rogue terror force. It appears that their efforts partially worked, with a segment of Republican voters now believing that the agency is too heavy-handed in its conduct.
Regardless of voter sentiment, though, or the opinions of Republican politicians in competitive races, there is no imagined “moderate” option available. The current choice is between enforcing the country’s laws and cutting off illegal immigration for good, or a Democratic midterm victory that sets up a potential 2028 return to open borders. Americans would do well not to be duped into voting for the party screaming “abolish ICE” – again.
