The Justice Department has charged 16 people in seven states over alleged illegal voting, fraudulent registration, and related offenses. The Daily Caller reported that many defendants are noncitizens accused of participating in federal elections.
Federal prosecutors filed cases in Texas, Idaho, Georgia, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New Jersey, and Michigan. According to the official DOJ release, the investigations also produced allegations involving wire fraud, naturalization fraud, passport fraud, identification fraud, and unlawful firearm purchases. Eight defendants reside in Texas.
The department accompanied the prosecutions with a public warning. “Let this be a warning to ANYONE trying to cheat and undermine our elections,” the DOJ wrote in a social post. “Spread the word!”
One Georgia case concerns Analiea Milliscent Eccles, a 44-year-old Venezuelan national and DACA recipient. Prosecutors allege that Eccles voted nine times from 2008 through 2024. She faces charges of voting as a non-citizen and falsely claiming American citizenship to vote.
In Idaho, prosecutors accuse Mexican national Avila Gomez of claiming American citizenship while registering and then voting in May 2022 and November 2024. A federal grand jury also charged Gomez with wire fraud, theft of government funds, passport fraud, identification fraud, false statements connected to a firearm purchase, and unlawful firearm possession.
New Jersey authorities arrested lawful permanent resident Santana Coulibaly after alleging that she registered in 2016, voted in the 2018 and 2020 federal elections, and submitted a provisional ballot in the 2024 presidential election. Prosecutors also accuse Coulibaly of making fraudulent statements on naturalization applications filed in 2021 and 2024.
Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald told Fox News that the Trump administration has charged 50 noncitizens with illegal voting. “America’s elections are for Americans,” McDonald said.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said authorities have more than 1620 open cases, 151 arrests, and over 300000 suspected cases under review. “One is too many, but the fact that we have 300,000 cases we’re looking into right now and 1,620 cases that are under investigation, and 151 arrests is unacceptable,” Mullin said.
Those figures describe investigations and suspected cases rather than established violations. The Justice Department emphasized that the filings contain accusations only and that every defendant remains presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
A rational election system should verify citizenship, maintain accurate voter rolls, impose meaningful penalties, and enforce the law consistently. The United States must address election integrity before public confidence erodes and the nation begins resembling countries where weak institutions leave election results under permanent suspicion.
