Democratic political leaders, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, are uniting behind Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, with the midterms fast approaching.

Harris has had a tenuous relationship with her party’s far left, despite the fact that she campaigned on an extreme-left platform during her failed 2020 presidential bid, making statements that came back to haunt her in 2024. She offered only tepid support for then-New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani during his successful 2025 bid, and has faced attacks from her party’s left flank for her pro-Israeli stance. However, Michigan is seen as a must-win state should the Democrats take control of the Senate, and Harris is no doubt attempting to repair her image for a 2028 presidential run.

The move is notable given the fact that El-Sayed has accused Israel of engaging in a genocide in Gaza, a point of view that is gospel for Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and aligned leftist candidates who have sprung up in the wake of Mamdani’s 2025 victory. El-Sayed has also recently struggled to distance himself from prominent far-left, America-hating streamer Hasan Piker, who he campaigned with during the Democratic primary. Piker recently claimed that America was worse than al Qaeda shortly after the anniversary of 9/11, and has previously defended Hamas’s terror campaign, saying they have a “right to resist.”

According to El-Sayed, he and Harris have spoken regarding tensions during the 2024, largely centered around Arab and black grievances in Michigan about each side being insufficiently deferential to the other. El-Sayed had initially supported an “uncommitted” Democratic movement during the 2024 Democratic presidential primary, in an attempt to move the party in a pro-Palestinian direction. He subsequently endorsed Harris for the presidency after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.

Notably, there is no meaningful difference between El-Sayed and mainline Democrats on left-wing social policy, as the party continues to downplay its most extreme positions. During an interview with FOX News host Jesse Watters following his primary victory, El-Sayed dismissed culture war issues such as male-to-female transgender athletes as a distraction, a common tactic for Democrats who support the policy, but do not want to defend it.

Recent polls show El-Sayed with a 48 to 46% lead over Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers. Should he pull off a victory in November, he will continue the trend of DSA and aligned candidates gaining in power since Mamdani’s 2025 mayoral victory. Time will tell if this faction usurps the establishment wing of the party for control going into 2028, despite Harris and other Democratic politicians’ attempts to form an uneasy alliance.
